Ahem ... While I have no idea whether Crush knows this or not,
Gene Wolfe holds the same hypothesis. Once upon a time, moments
before I first joined this list back in '97, Gene Wolfe answered
a passel of questions from this list in a sort of informal
email interview. The entire article, "Train from Wolfeland,"
was posted by Mantis and can be found in the archives at
http://www.urth.net/whorl/archives/v0006/0350.shtml -- however
the relevant question and answer are quite short:

As for the Outisder thinking "well" of Pike, well, if we=20
identify the Outsider as the God worshipped by Christians,
