Robert Borski's heroine as werwolf theory seems very sound.

FWIW, this has similarity to a bit in URTH, wherein Severian is attacked in
the dark on the ship Tzadkiel. As no doubt everyone here recalls, "Idas"
the albino (actually an undine juvenile) is the first assassin Severian
discovers, but Gunnie-the-love-interest was another one, and Purn was the
third (the one bitten). Point: Gunnie was the one who was burned when
Severian fired his laser pistol against the assassins, and the burn covered
her chest and abdomen.
