Interesting post by Marc. I didn't find any of the subtleties in PANDORA
that Marc did; the few "clues" I did notice seemed to me to be just
affectations leading nowhere. It struck me as being basically just a murder
mystery, and not a particularly good one, either. Furthermore, I was
repelled by the misogyny in the portrayal of Holly's mother (unlike Marc, I
wasn't put off by Holly, but she didn't erase the bad taste left by her
mother). If it hadn't been written by Wolfe, I might have filed it away in
my mind as "mildly diverting"; as it was, it was a severe disappointment.
The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (iirc) said there had been speculation
that PANDORA was actually written early in Wolfe's career. Can anyone
confirm or deny this?
